ESD Training Course, EN 61340-5-1:2024 Course - Protection of electronic equipment against electrostatic discharge.
VINTECOM has just completed the training course on electrostatic protection standards according to EN 61340-5-1:2024 and the assessment and confirmation of the level of compliance of the ESD anti-static system for the production range of electronic components for headphones at ESTRON Vietnam Company - a member company of ESTRON Denmark (Denmark).
The training course on electrostatic protection standards according to EN 61340-5-1:2024 by VINTECOM International aims to help trainees master the latest updated requirements of the EN 61340-5-1 new version 2024 on electrostatic control (ESD), ensuring compliance and improving production efficiency in electrostatically sensitive environments.
1. Training course objectives by VINTECOM International
+ Understand the basic principles of static electricity and the effects of ESD on electronic components.
+ Update new changes in EN 61340-5-1:2024 compared to the previous version.
+ Guidance on building, implementing and maintaining an ESD control program in accordance with the standard.
+ Master the methods of measuring, testing and assessing the level of compliance of enterprises with ESD requirements.
+ Practice ESD control techniques in the factory, from protective clothing, grounding systems, EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area) areas to safe component handling methods.
+ Provide knowledge to prepare for independent verification assessments of ESD compliance according to EN 61340-5-1.
2. ESD compliance verification assessment activities according to EN 61340-5-1 include:
+ Testing and assessing the ESD system: On-site assessment in production areas, laboratories and packaging storage areas in EPA.
+ Measurement of key parameters: Surface resistance, electrostatic voltage, electrostatic discharge capability of ionizers, clothing and tools used in EPA environments.
+ Work process compliance validation: Check the conformity of operating procedures, equipment maintenance and environmental control according to EN 61340-5-1 and PE and FG grounding systems.
+ Risk analysis and improvement recommendations: Identify non-conformances and propose measures to improve ESD control effectiveness.
+ Non-conformance correction guidance: Provide guidance on correcting non-conformances to qualify for independent validation.
In addition, the validation activity includes reviewing the voltage measurement method according to the HBM (Human Body Model), CDM (Charged Device Model) and Isolated Conductor Model to comply with EN 61340-5-1. Below are the assessment activities to see the extent of these measurements:
1. When determining the ESD sensitivity of components according to standards
+ To determine the ESD sensitivity, measuring according to HBM, CDM is required to ensure that the device is not damaged by discharge.
• Standards that often require HBM and CDM measurements include:
• ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-001 (HBM)
• ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-002 (CDM)
• IEC 61340-3-1 (HBM, CDM)
2. Assessing insulating surfaces or objects in the EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area)
• In the EPA area, there are insulating objects (e.g., ungrounded workbenches, plastic boxes, tape, antistatic plastic bags, etc.), the voltage buildup on these objects must be measured according to the Isolated Conductor Model to assess the ESD risk.
• EN 61340-5-1 requires control of insulating objects that may pose a risk, so measurement is necessary if no alternative measures such as ionization are available.
3. When required by customer or internal standards
• Assessment of compliance with customer requirements and internal regulations may require testing and reporting of data on HBM, CDM or Isolated Conductor.
4. When a product failure related to ESD occurs
• Assessment confirms that the product is faulty due to electrostatic discharge but the cause is unknown, measures should be taken to measure voltage according to HBM, CDM, Isolated Conductor to determine the source of the damage.
• Assessment of improvement of ESD control system and prevention of recurrence of similar failures.
